Knots as Vocabulary, Not Recipes
Knots grouped by function: what a bend does that a hitch does not, and when a knot's name stops being enough for the job at hand.

Knots are grouped by the job they do, not by their shape or their name. A hitch ties a rope to something else, a bend joins two ropes, a loop makes a fixed eye, and a binding squeezes a bundle shut. The grouping is a vocabulary: it tells you what question the knot answers before you learn how to tie it.
How are knots grouped by the job they do?
Function first, form second. A hitch attaches a rope to a support: a rail, a post, a ring, a carabiner, or another rope. A bend connects two ropes to each other. A loop produces a fixed eye that stays open under load. A binding wraps and constricts, holding objects or rope ends together rather than holding a person or a load.
That four-part split is old and practical, and it survives because it matches the questions people actually ask. If the problem is "this rope must stay on this post," you are shopping in the hitch aisle. If the problem is "these two ropes must become one line," you are shopping in bends. The category narrows the field before any tying begins.
Within each category, knots are further sorted by behavior. Some grip and slide, like a prusik, which is a thin cord loop that grabs a thicker loaded rope and can be pushed along it by hand. Some lock hard, like a constrictor knot, which is chosen when the wrap must not loosen. Some are meant to be untied after heavy load, and some are not. The scale matters because difficulty is not the same as suitability: an easy knot used in the wrong category fails just as completely as a hard one tied badly.
Grouping by function also exposes the gaps. A category with only two or three familiar members is usually a category where people have stopped learning names and started improvising. Improvisation is fine until the load is a person.
What separates a bend from a hitch in practice?
The difference is what the knot is attached to. A hitch holds a rope to a support, and it can usually be tied, adjusted, and removed while the support stays where it is. A bend holds two ropes to each other, and it has to survive tension from both directions at once.
In practice, that produces different failure modes. A hitch can slip along the support, capsize, or jam so tightly that it must be cut. A bend can slip through itself, because each rope is pulling the other's tail. Bends are therefore judged on symmetry and on tail length: a sheet bend, used to join two ropes of different diameters, works because the thinner rope is the one that tucks and the thicker one forms the bight. Reverse that and the knot is weaker and less stable.
The two categories also differ in how they are inspected. A hitch is checked by loading it and watching whether it grips or creeps. A bend is checked by looking at both tails and confirming that neither is being drawn into the knot. A bowline, which makes a fixed eye that can be untied after load, is a loop, not a bend, and it is inspected differently again: the eye must stay the size you set, and the tail must remain outside the loop.
One more practical split: a hitch often relies on the support's diameter and surface. The same clove hitch behaves differently on a smooth rail and a rough post. A bend relies on the two ropes: their diameters, their stiffness, and whether they are slick or fuzzy. That is why a bend that is reliable in one rope combination can be marginal in another, and why the diameter note on a sheet bend page is not a detail but the point.
When does knowing a knot's name stop being useful?
A name stops being useful the moment it is used as a substitute for a decision. Knowing the word "bowline" tells you nothing about whether the rope is long enough, whether the anchor is sound, or whether the load will be shock-loaded. The name is an index entry, not an answer.
Names also fail when they travel. The same knot can carry different names in climbing, sailing, and scouting, and a name that is unambiguous in one community is vague in another. A reader who searches only by name may find three different knots under one word, or one knot under three words. Category plus function is more stable than the label.
The third failure is scale. A knot that holds a tarp is not automatically suited to holding a person, and the difference is not the name but the rope, the load, and the consequence of slipping. Difficulty ratings help here, but only as a rough signal: a three-level scale tells you how much practice a knot demands, not how much risk it removes.
What replaces the name is a short set of questions asked before tying: what is this attached to, what is pulling on it, will it need to be untied, and what happens if it moves. Those questions map directly onto the functional categories. A hitch answers the first, a bend answers the second, a loop answers the third, and the fourth is answered by nothing except judgment.
Why the category comes before the method
Method is the part people want first, and it is the part that makes least sense without the category. A step-by-step sequence for a hitch, taught without saying that it is a hitch, produces a knot that works on the practice post and surprises the user on a wet rail.
Category-first learning also makes memory cheaper. Instead of storing dozens of unrelated procedures, a reader stores a handful of jobs and a few knots per job. When a new knot appears, it slots into an existing shelf: this one grips and slides, this one locks, this one joins unequal ropes. The shelf is the vocabulary.
This is why indexes and difficulty scales are more than navigation aids. An alphabetical index lets you start from a word you half-remember. A category page lets you start from a problem you fully have. The second route is the one that works when the word is missing.
What a functional vocabulary does not cover
Grouping by function does not tell you whether a knot is appropriate for life-safety use, and no general reference can. It does not account for rope condition, age, abrasion, or the specific standards that apply to climbing, rescue, or rigging work. Those come from training, inspection, and the organizations that set the rules.
It also does not resolve the question of dressing. A knot that is correctly tied but poorly dressed, with crossed strands or a short tail, is a different knot in behavior. Function tells you which knot to reach for; dressing and loading tell you whether it will hold.
What the vocabulary does is make the first decision honest. It forces the question "what is this knot for" before the question "how do I tie it," and that order is the difference between a recipe and a skill.
