Be the Red Rocker or the Blue Bomber, and battle an opponent with life-sized Rock'Em Sock'Em Robots! Description of Art Installation: ------------------------------- Life size boxing ring with two life-sized "Rock'Em Sock'Em Robots" - the children's toy from the 60s. The robots are a highly participatory activity, one participant "steers" the robot while the other participant climbs into the robot shell and punches. Teams of two take on teams of two, and assistants load participants into the robots and prepare them while a hyperbolic announcer pleases the crowd. "Combats" are fast and participants are loaded quickly, allowing for a high rate of participation. The art installation will be across the Esplanade from our theme camp - so if we do not get theme camp placement, we will not be bringing the robots. Either way they do not need playa placement outside of the normal Esplanade space afforded to Esplanade camps. Associated With Theme Camp: -------------------------- yes Theme Camp Association: ---------------------- Ultra Stunt Danger Academy Physical Description of Art Installation: ---------------------------------------- A life size boxing ring contains two life-sized "Rock'Em Sock'Em Robots" - the children's toy from the 60s. The robots are a highly participatory activity, one participant "steers" the robot while the other participant climbs into the robot shell and punches. They take on another team of two in death-defying robot combat! There are assistants to help load the participants into the robots as well as a boisterous and hyperbolic announcer. The bright lights and loud clanging are all part of the show. Combats last only a minute or two, and it only takes moments to load in new participants, so the installation is able to "service" large numbers of participants every night that it runs. Project Footprint: ----------------- 30x30x10 Scaffolding or structure over 15 feet high : ------------------------------------------- no Holes dug in the playa : ----------------------- no Interference with nearby art?: ----------------------------- no Interference Detail: ------------------- The robots are somewhat loud, but not amplified. They need to be located near the Esplanade, so they certainly won't bother any other installations, but they *cannot* be near a loud, amplified project or concert. The participants need to be able to hear the instructions of the announcer and of the "loaders" Quiet Area Requirement: ---------------------- yes Dark Area Requirement: --------------------- no Illumination Details: -------------------- A number of 500W spotlights are used while the project is running, and christmas lights are used to illuminate the boxing ring during off hours to protect it. Energy Requirements: ------------------- Approximately 4kWh/day. This will be powered by my vehicle's large battery bank, which is replenished by a large generator (which is also used for town power needs). Batteries: --------- 30kWh bank: 10 DEKA AGM Group 8D batteries (used for other purposes as well) Generator Powered: ----------------- yes Number Of Generators: -------------------- 1-3 Fuel: ---- ['Diesel'] Other Sources: ------------- no Fuel Storage: ------------ None Leave No Trace Plan: ------------------- The boxing ring "floor" is made of wood to protect the playa. Each night after running the robots, the workers clean the area of debris left by participants. At tear down at the end of the week a complete sweep is done of the area to get all small materials. We follow the LNT plan of our camp which is extensive and has gotten us green marks on the LNT map. Recycle Materials: ----------------- The robots will return to their home in San Francisco where they will serve as butlers. Or just sit in my garage. One of the two.
